The Oruro Carnival is one of the most extraordinary cultural events on earth — a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Held each February in the highland city of Oruro at 3,700m altitude, the carnival is a fusion of pre-Columbian traditions and Catholic ritual. The centrepiece is the Diablada (Dance of the Devils) — an elaborate dance performed by thousands of costumed dancers wearing magnificent devil masks and costumes, winding through the city in a procession that lasts up to 20 hours.
