Every December 23 since 1897, artisans compete to carve oversized radishes — plus dried flowers and corn husks — into elaborate religious and folkloric scenes displayed around Oaxaca's Zócalo. The municipal government grows special radishes near Tequio Park specifically for the roughly 100 adult competitors and additional youth categories. Crowds can wait four to five hours to view the carved displays before booths are dismantled the next day.
