Montevideo's Carnaval is the world's longest carnival, running from late January through the end of February. Unlike any other carnival in the world, it is dominated by three uniquely Uruguayan art forms: the murga (satirical theatrical chorus), the parodistas (musical comedy troupes), and the candombe drum groups. The Desfile de las Llamadas in the Palermo and Cordón neighbourhoods — where Afro-Uruguayan comparsas parade with thundering candombe drums — is one of South America's most electrifying spectacles.
