La Griteria ("the Shouting") is Nicaragua's most popular religious festival, celebrated nationwide each December 7. Communities set up home altars dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and neighbors go door to door singing traditional chants in exchange for small gifts of sweets, fruit, or drinks, a tradition especially strong in the colonial city of León.
