For six days at the start of each year, the Andean town of Pillaro fills with thousands of dancers wearing elaborate, heavy devil masks in a tradition rooted in indigenous resistance to Spanish colonial religion. Recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ecuador, the event now draws local and foreign visitors who can join the dancing for a small fee. (Date shown is estimated from the event's typical annual timing — confirm with the organizer closer to the date.)
