Garifuna Settlement Day 2026

Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19 commemorates the arrival of the Garifuna people on the shores of Belize in 1832. The celebration in Dangriga (the Garifuna cultural capital) is extraordinary: re-enactments of the landing, Wari drumming, Jankunu dancing, traditional Garifuna food like hudut and cassava bread, and spiritual dugu ceremonies. The Garifuna people and their music were declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
