Fox Hill Day is the oldest continuously observed festival in the Bahamas, commemorating the 1838 emancipation of enslaved Africans — celebrated a week after the official Emancipation Day because word reportedly reached the Fox Hill community late. Held on the second Tuesday of August at the Fox Hill Parade Grounds in Nassau, the free festival includes a morning church service, street parades, maypole plaiting, greasy pole climbing, live music and Bahamian food stalls.
