In the town of Macha, Potosí, this festival combines Catholic cross veneration with the pre-Columbian Tinku ritual, in which community members from different ayllus engage in ceremonial hand-to-hand combat believed to fertilize the earth with spilled blood. Folkloric dance troupes accompany the ritual with trumpets, drums and whistles. (Date shown is estimated from the event's typical annual timing — confirm with the organizer closer to the date.)
