On November 1 (All Saints' Day), the towns of Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez near Antigua Guatemala host one of the world's most extraordinary traditions: enormous handmade kites — some up to 25 metres in diameter — are constructed by local Maya craftspeople and flown over the cemeteries as a way of communicating with the spirits of the dead. The kites are painted with intricate designs and carry messages to ancestors. The event draws visitors from around the world.
