The Feria de la Chinita (Festival of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá) is Venezuela's largest and most beloved religious and popular festival. Held in Maracaibo each November, it celebrates the Patroness of Venezuela — the Virgin of Chiquinquirá. For two weeks, the city fills with gaitas zuliana (Maracaibo's distinctive folk music), fireworks, processions, and the fervent devotion of over a million Venezuelans. The gaita music of Maracaibo — played on cuatro, furro, maracas, and tambora — is the sound of Venezuelan Christmas.
