Oaxaca's Day of the Dead blends Zapotec and Mixtec ancestral tradition with citywide ofrendas, cemetery candlelight vigils, and comparsas — satirical costumed street parades with banda music and giant puppets. The best-known cemetery vigil happens at Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán's Mictlancíhuatl panteón on the night of October 31, drawing large crowds alongside food stalls and carnival games. Similar all-night muerteadas take place in the Etla valley communities through November 2.
