The Carnival of El Callao is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Held in the gold-mining town of El Callao in Bolívar state, the carnival fuses Afro-Venezuelan, Caribbean Creole, and indigenous traditions into a uniquely Venezuelan expression. The distinctive calipso music (not to be confused with Caribbean calypso) and the elaborate costumes of the madamas (women dressed in colonial servant attire), miners, and diablos (devils) fill the streets in a celebration that reflects El Callao's multicultural gold-rush history.
