Widely regarded as the most popular carnival in the Dominican Republic and tracing roots back roughly five centuries, the La Vega Carnival fills the streets every Sunday in February with elaborately masked characters (including the famous devil-like "Lechones"), competing neighborhood comparsas, live music trucks and whip-cracking mock battles. The grand finale traditionally coincides with Dominican Independence Day on February 27.
