The Parintins Folklore Festival (Festival de Parintins) is Brazil's second-largest popular festival after Carnival, drawing 100,000 visitors to the small Amazon island city of Parintins. For three nights in late June, two rival factions — Boi-Bumbá Garantido (red) and Caprichoso (blue) — compete in the 35,000-seat Bumbódromo arena with spectacular theatrical performances, elaborate floats, shamanic rituals, indigenous Amazonian themes, and tens of thousands of costumed performers. The rivalry between the two factions is legendary and deeply emotional.
