The Barranquilla Carnival is a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity and the world's second-largest carnival after Rio de Janeiro. For four days before Ash Wednesday, the city of Barranquilla erupts into colour with the Battle of Flowers (Batalla de Flores), the Grand Parade (Gran Parada), cumbia and mapalé dancing, comparsas, and the famous 'burial of Joselito Carnaval' on Tuesday night. The cumbia — Colombia's national rhythm — was born in this region.
