Every January 6th, the Accompong Maroons of St. Elizabeth Parish commemorate the 1738/39 peace treaty their ancestor Captain Cudjoe signed with British colonial forces, an event that guaranteed the Maroons land and autonomy. The small village of Accompong swells from around 500 residents to several thousand visitors for a day of abeng-horn calls, drumming, traditional dance, storytelling and a communal feast of roasted yam and jerk pork around bonfires. (Date shown is estimated from the event's typical annual timing — confirm with the organizer closer to the date.)
